...shaping artistic visions of light
Custom Crosses
by Tomas Fernandez
The contemporary crosses that have
been inspired by God and brought into
reality through the mind, heart, and
artistic talents of Tomas Fernandez all
have one thing in common...they are
sculptures of light.
This sculpting of light within the cross is
directly connected to the divine
commission and vision of Crux Gloria,
which impacted Tomas' spiritual and
artistic life forever.
"In one touch God can illuminate
perspectives you have never considered.
Such was the case when He
commissioned this monumental Cross. It is
simple and yet profound. A window to see
through, the door way, the gate to Heaven.
It is a cross of light."
During the day we see that instrument
upon which our Savior died. At night, the
darkness reclaims its instrument of torture
and the message of the resurrection
shines forth.
The lighting is hidden within the cross.
Illuminating the figure of Christ at night.

steel and bronze processional cross Saint Davids Episcopal Church Ashburn, Virginia
|
St. John the Apostle in Leesburg
VA commissioned this fourteen
foot stained glass and steel cross
in 1991.
The glass was carefully chosen to
communicate the feeling of water.
A very powerful effect happens
when the lights that are hidden in
the wall behind the cross are
turned on and the dark, almost
midnight blue, turns into
translucent watery pale blue.
The Living Water combined with
the Light are what awaits us as we
recognize the "why" of the Cross
and walk beyond it into the
Kingdom of Heaven.

Hidden Christ
"Jesus took the bread, and blessed, and broke it,
and gave it to them, and said, Take, eat: this is
my body."
Jesus was broken for all of us. His last supper
ties Him in some mysterious way to the Cross.
He also said, whenever you do this, do it in
remembrance of me. He is our manna that gives
us nourishment to make the pilgrimage home.
This sculpture is hand forged bronze, aluminum
and cast bronze. Lighting is hidden behind the
aluminum. Approximately 15" in diameter.

Corpus Christi...Latin for "Body of Christ"
The first "Corpus Christi" design was a bronze
memorial for S. Gehman's husband and may
be seen at Kanuga Conferences retreat center
in North Carolina. This design touches on the
vision of "Crux Gloria," (Glorious Cross), yet
also conveys that the Eucharist (symbolized by
the circle) and the body of Christ are one and
the same. At first we see a familiar celtic cross
and then, when the figure and the circle are
illuminated at night, we see that the two are
divinely connected as one and the same.
Crux Gloria stands 33 feet high and weighs 17,000 pounds. It may be seen on highway route 7 in Purcellville, VA at Saint Francis de Sales catholic church

The first Crux Gloria was sculpted by Tomas
Fernandez in 1988 directly following his
vision and divine commission. This model
was given to the Franciscans at Saint
Francis de Sales.

Beyond Forever © 1988 Tomas Fernandez
This sculpture model represents the complete vision of the Glorious Cross of Light...
The Wall represents what we must break free from and leave behind, approaching each other in love and forgiveness.
Yet only through the cross can we realize the fullness of Grace that comes from Him. The light that transforms our love into something eternal and free beyond forever...
